Writer Of The Week: Janet Newman

We’re delighted to introduce another “Friend” debut author this week! You can read Janet’s lovely story “Seeds Of Change” in this week’s issue.

Tell us the inspiration behind your story “Seeds Of Hope”.

The essence of the story is based on real life. In the village where I live, there are allotments that you bypass when walking along the path to the local cemetery. I once noticed that some allotment produce had been left out on the path for passers-by to help themselves. Imagination took over and I had my story.

How long have you been writing fiction?

About twenty years ago, suffering from a severe bout of Empty Nest Syndrome, I enrolled on an OU English Literature course, which kept me busy for six years.  Next, I did a two-year Creative Writing course at Leicester University, and have been writing fiction ever since.

Who are some of your favourite writers?

I like many of the classics: Dickens, the Brontes, Austen etc. whilst among the more contemporary authors I enjoy are William Boyd, Louise Doughty and Maggie O’Farrell.

What are your future writing plans?

I’d like to think that, someday, I will finish the novel I started writing several years ago but abandoned half-way through. Realistically though, I’m probably more likely to continue to enjoy the quick-fix of short story writing.

What advice would you give someone trying to find writing success with the “Friend”?

Keep reading the magazine, keep checking out the website, and keep trying.

Thank you, Janet! Wise words indeed.

Tracey Steel

Having worked on a number of magazines over the years, I have found my perfect place on the “Friend” as I’m obsessed with reading and never go anywhere without a book! I read all of our stories with a mug of tea close by and usually a bit of strong cheese too!
