“The People’s Friend” Writing Hour is held every Tuesday at 11 a.m. on Twitter and it’s always a brilliant time! It’s a time when we can get together with writers for a chat.

Every week we summarise everything that went on for those who missed out.

How is everyone this week? Share some good news with us.

It’s always brilliant to catch up with all your good news. There’s always plenty to update us on.

We were saddened by the passing of Hilary Mantel last week. Did you read the ‘Wolf Hall’ trilogy?

Many of us on the Fiction team loved the trilogy and we were all devastated to hear the news.

Philippa Carey had a great point:

We’re hosting our online Serial Writing Workshop on 28 September. Do you find it easy to write a story with various viewpoints or do you prefer to stick to one voice?

Lots of you said that it entirely depends on the story being told. We agree!

If you could rewrite the ending of any book, which would it be and how would you change it?

Lots of agreement here! Jane Eyre was brought up a few times . . .

What’s everyone reading at the moment?

There is always such wide range of books on the go.

Here at the Fiction desk, Tracey is reading ‘The City Of Tears’ by Kate Mosse. Lucy has just started Richard Osman’s new book, ‘The Bullet That Missed’ and Abbie is about to start the next book club pick – ‘Luckenbooth’ by Jenni Fagan.

If you owned a bookshop, what themed events would you organise?

We would absolutely attend all of the events you all came up with in the thread!

Liz Filleul commented to say that this would make a great story – we totally agree!

This would make quite the spooky scene for anybody happening to pass by the shop . . . we love it!

We’ll see you at our next Writing Hour on Twitter — 11 a.m. on Tuesday 5 October, 2022.

Abigail Phillips

Abbie is the newest member of the fiction team at the "Friend." She loves how varied the role is - every day is different and there is always a new story to read. She is keen to work closely with established writers and discover new writers, too.
