“The People’s Friend” Writing Hour is held every Tuesday at 11 a.m. on Twitter and it’s always a brilliant time! It’s a time when we can get together with writers for a chat.
Every week we summarise everything that went on for those who missed out.
This week we talked about viewpoints, serials and pre-ordering books.
How is everyone? Did you have a good weekend? What’s your news?
Our writers lead exciting lives!
This weekend (a bank holiday for some) included a writing retreat, family visits, camping, holidays and a music festival.
Do you ever pre-order books, or do you wait until they hit the shelves?
Some prefer to wait until the book drops at their local bookshop.
But others like to pre-order, especially if it’s by a favourite author or friend.
What’s your preferred amount of viewpoints when writing a story?
Lots of people said that it depends on the length. For a short story, most like to stick to one viewpoint. For a novel, they like to tell the story through multiple viewpoints.
Do you prefer the PF historical or contemporary serials? What type would you write?
When it comes to writing serials, historical seems to be just a tad more popular than contemporary according to the answers we got.
Most don’t have a preference for reading serials, though.
As Mary Jasper said:
Definitely either. A good story is the important thing. I love a compelling story through which I learn something new. What would I write? Either sort. Historical might be easier for me, but I’d like to try anything. I think you have a workshop coming up?

We do have an online serial workshop coming up on September 28, 2022!
Which fictional character would you like to talk to in real life?
While lots of characters were mentioned, only three received more than one nomination.
Those three were . . . Miss Marple, Ruth Galloway and Anne Elliot.
Chatting to all three would be fabulous!
Do you have any writing news that you’d like to promote? Or maybe you’ve just finished reading a wonderful book?
I know I’m a bit late; only just seen this. A copy of my latest pocket novel arrived just now. I think the cover is absolutely marvellous. So pleased. It’s due out on September 15th pic.twitter.com/EU1IyUNS3B
