Editor’s Diary: Too Much Gardening!

In my last Editor’s Diary, I bemoaned the unseasonable weather we’d been having. Well, what a difference a week makes!

No sooner had I hit “publish” on that post than the sun came out. And it’s been shining ever since!

We seem to have plunged straight into summer, missing out spring altogether.

Not that I’m complaining. I love the warmer weather – the hotter, the better!

But because the weather had been inclement for most of May, my garden was looking a bit overgrown. A lot overgrown, if I’m honest.

So last weekend, with the sun shining and no pressing engagements in the calendar, I set to, determined to sort it out.

First stop was the local garden centre for compost (peat-free), bedding plants and basket liners.

Back home, a quick cup of tea fortified me for the task in hand.

I spent the whole afternoon planting, weeding and generally tidying up. There was more to do than I had thought!

I try not to be overly tidy, as I am keen to encourage wildlife into the garden. But there is a balance to be struck – and the scales had definitely tipped too far in favour of the wild look!

There’s nothing better than being outdoors on a warm day, surrounded by birdsong. Which is possibly why I carried on much longer than was wise for the first serious gardening session of the year.

It was only when I started to water all of the new plants that I realised just how tired I was. And my back was aching!

However, as you can see from my picture, my garden is now looking pretty good!
