Willie’s View: Cowden’s Japanese Garden

If you haven’t yet visited the Japanese Gardens of Cowden near Dollar in Clackmannanshire then, with spring in the air, now’s maybe the time to go…

Being only a couple miles from home, I’m fortunate enough to be able to pick and choose my days so, when it promised to be both sunny and without wind recently, I didn’t need to think long about where to be heading.

On such days the gardens are never disappointing with countless opportunities to capture reflections of the plants, bridges, lanterns and Azumaya.

Besides the formal gardens, Cowden has the added attraction of an adventure park and woodland trail taking us to the wee waterfall that once provided Cowden Castle with hydro electricity. The castle was demolished in 1952.

Fairy Village

Unfortunately, recent winter storms have taken a heavy toll on many of the trees within the woods. For most gardeners this could be a real disaster but here at Cowden it’s been a god-send to a whole community of fairies!

With the fallen trees removed, the remaining stumps have been ingeniously converted into a village of fairy houses. There are no two alike; each having its own unique character. One is even fitted with a stained-glass window.

And, for anyone looking for an investment opportunity, one with clear potential has a “For Sale” sign in the garden. I wouldn’t think about it for too long though – it’s the last one!
