It’s my birthday quite soon, and on a video call with my parents last night I was asked how I planned on celebrating.
“Well,” I answered, with a slightly confused shrug of the shoulders, “it’s not like we’ll be going anywhere.”
But, on reflection, that’s a little defeatist.
The current coronavirus lockdown has put an end to a lot of plans, I’m sure (including mine, which were to spend it in one or two or three pubs in Edinburgh).
But that doesn’t mean that they can’t be salvaged in some way.
For example, this couple decided to stage their planned anniversary cruise from home.
And this woman and her family embarked on an entire pub crawl indoors, to help celebrate her 23rd birthday. Her dad even checked her ID, just to make sure they weren’t breaking any laws . . .
And with VE Day coming up, I’ve been reading about plans for a quarantine garden party in a nearby village. Apparently, neighbours are putting plans in place to all be out in their gardens at the same time, celebrating together — but at a safe social distance!
So it seems that celebrating isn’t as difficult as I initially assumed. It just takes a little more thought, and a little extra effort.
In difficult times, that little extra effort could be just what we need to help get us through.
What am I doing on my birthday?
I’m going to enjoy it.
