Colleen Shannon: “Our loyal readers are part of the family, too”
As part of our 150th celebrations, we asked our writers to let us know what the “Friend” means to them. Here, Colleen Shannon shares her thoughts:
“The ‘Friend’ has always been part of a family business and that might explain why working for the magazine feels so much like, well, a family.
“You will never find a nicer group of colleagues, who cheerfully share the good times and keep your spirits up during those spells when the going is more difficult and when deadlines are looming.
“Our loyal readers are part of the family, too. They talk to us, share their stories and special moments, and keep us on our toes. I love getting out to events where I can have the chance to meet ‘Friend’ readers.
“I’m so proud to be part of this journalistic tradition, with its historic roots in Dundee. The professional standards are very high and there is never any pressure to cut corners or sensationalise a straightforward story. The ‘Friend’ coverage is always kind and positive, too, which is a rare approach these days and something to treasure and carry forward.
“Happy Birthday, and here’s to another 150 years of the ‘Friend’s’ unique and gracious style of journalism and storytelling.”
