Editor’s Diary: Happy New Year!
It’s the first Editor’s Diary of 2020 already — how did that happen?
It feels like some sort of science fiction, far-in-the-future date, not the here and now!
But here it is, and now is most definitely January 2020.
As I have mentioned before, the “Friend” office closes for two days at New Year – January 1 and 2.
It’s lovely to have a quieter break after the hectic family whirl that is Christmas.
New Year is a time for following tradition in Scotland. In my household, that means going for a long walk on New Year’s Day.
The beach at St Andrews is my destination of choice if the weather permits. A brisk, bracing walk along the sand to the very end of the beach and back is the perfect way to start the year!
This year, the weather didn’t just permit, it positively beamed on us.
The picture above was taken on January 1, and shows bonnie Scotland at its absolute best.
There was a fair wind blowing, of course, but that only added to the scene.
You can just about make out the wind-sculpted patterns on the sand in my photo.
A little indulgence
The beach was packed with families and dog-walkers near the car parks, but after a couple of miles the crowds petered out and there wasn’t another soul to be seen. Bliss!
One of the great things about getting out and active is that you don’t feel guilty about tucking into a hearty meal afterwards.
Another New Year tradition in my house is indulging in large helpings of home-made trifle.
Without jelly, of course — it wouldn’t be a true Scottish trifle otherwise! You’ll find my recipe here.
With appetites sharpened by all that fresh sea air, this year’s was better than ever.
Thank goodness my yoga class starts again soon . . .
