Editor’s Diary: Time Flies

When I sat down to write my Editor’s Diary this week, I glanced at the calendar.

The first week in October already – how did that happen? The year seems to have flashed by in the blink of an eye.

It’s astonishing to think that the “Friend” team have now been working from home for 20 months.

We’ve settled so well into the “new” normal that the thought of being back in the office can seem a little daunting at times. But it’s just another in a long line of changes that have come and gone in the magazine’s 152-year history.

It’s going to be so nice when we’re finally reunited in person!

I’ve come to realise that October is a pretty significant month in my life.

Which is odd, really, as I’m not a particular fan of autumn. I love the warmth and long daylight hours of summer, and to me, autumn is just one step closer to cold, dark winter.

But big things seem to happen in my life in October.

I started my DC Thomson career on the first Monday in October back in 1990.

Little did I know then what that would lead to!

Mr PF Ed and I moved into the house I’m sitting in now in October 1994. I never imagined that it would still be home all these years later. Or that it would also become my office!

This October, I’m not expecting anything quite as momentous to happen.

But I do have a much-postponed holiday to Skye coming up later in the month.

Given everything that has happened in recent times, that’s exciting enough for me!
