More Colour, More Options.
The 1970s
The 1970s saw Silver Jubilee celebrations held across Britain and the Commonwealth, the Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd-Webber musical “Jesus Christ Superstar” make its West End debut, Douglas Adam’s cult science fiction book “The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy” was published and the Watergate Scandal occurred.
The most significant change to “The People’s Friend” in the 70s was that it began to be printed partly in colour.
Printing in colour was now cheaper and more readily available than it had been before – and what a difference it made! Until then, the front cover scenes had mainly been of towns and villages, but the new colours available meant that more scenic illustrations by J. Campbell Kerr were now visible on the newsstands.
