Blame Canada . . . For My Holiday Belly

Canada

It’s no secret that I’ve just come back from a honeymoon in Canada (I went on about it enough in the office!)

It was a spectacular trip. If you’ve ever considered taking the train across the Great White North, I would thoroughly recommend it.

Mrs Digital Ed and I first flew from Glasgow to London, then from London to Toronto.

We spent a few days in Toronto, where we managed to meet up with a relative who lives over there, and to explore some of the tourist sights we missed on our first trip a few years back.

We also found ourselves back in the habit of eating poutine.

To a person from Scotland, the opportunity to eat chips and cheese without having to buy it from a kebab shop at 1 a.m. is a rare one. We were happy to indulge!

Then the real excitement began, when we boarded VIA Rail’s “Canadian”, the train that would take us nearly 4,500 km across the country, all the way to Vancouver on the Pacific coast.

On the right track

The views from our room on the train were nice:

But the views from some of the stops didn’t disappoint either:

While navigating your way around a train travelling sometimes as fast as 90 mph could prove to be a challenge, the biggest issue was trying to pass one another by in the corridors:

Canada

A holiday belly for the ages

With breakfast, lunch and a four course dinner laid on for each of the trip’s four days, plus snacks and a bar offering very generous measures, my waistline stood almost no chance at all.

But while we were in that little bubble on the train, it was impossible to resist.

Almost failing to haul myself out through the door in Vancouver without assistance was an indication the indulgence needed to end!

Vancouver

Vancouver in the autumn really is beautiful. And the weather was so good that we were able to walk off some of our excesses!

Canada

A return trip?

. . . isn’t likely. Unless we get married again!

The holiday was quite expensive, but as a “bucket list” event I absolutely loved it.

Unfortunately I didn’t get the chance to meet any of our subscribers from Canada while I was there!
