Editor’s Diary: The Mitchell Library

Editor's Diary

The first week back at work after a holiday is always hectic, and this one was no exception.

I dealt with the near-300 e-mails in my inbox on Monday morning, and after that plunged right back into the usual routine of planning, meetings and reading.

Luckily I felt rested, relaxed and full of energy after my week on Skye!

Team Building

It wasn’t all work and no play, though.

Our lovely colleagues from This England magazine, who are based in our offices in London’s Fleet Street, were visiting Dundee for the week, and the whole “Friend” team took the opportunity to go out for lunch with them. That’s the kind of team-building we like!

We headed for our favourite Italian restaurant for pizza, pasta and lots of laughs. We’re such frequent visitors there that we seem to have been given our own table . . .

The Mitchell Library

The week was doubly hectic because I knew I wouldn’t be in the office on the Friday. Instead, Margaret, Alex, Wendy, Marion and I were heading for the Mitchell Library in Glasgow to take part in an afternoon of talks about the “Friend” as part of our 150th anniversary celebrations.

We were joined by our colleagues David and Barry from the DC Thomson Archives department (who Marion interviewed recently for our website), and our friends Kirstie Blair, David Goldie and Charlotte Lauder from the University of Strathclyde.

We had an unfortunate start, involving a cancelled train and a replacement bus from Perth to Glasgow. But after that, things went without a hitch. The event was a great success, and I met lots of lovely “Friend” readers who were keen to chat.

Keep an eye out for a video of the event, coming to the website soon!

Up Next

The next event we’ll be holding takes place at the Scottish Storytelling Centre in Edinburgh on May 11. I’m already looking forward to it.
