With the recent snowy spell, we thought this uplifting winter poem by Eileen Hay captured the magic of the season, but the downsides, too. As she says, we just have to “grin and bear it”.
Eileen Hay, who regularly contributes poetry to “The People’s Friend”, has always written poetry. She likes to write about the seasons, finding evocative words to capture the mood.
We hope this verse makes you smile when the weather is cold.
Grin And Bear It
When thinking of a winter scene
We picture tranquil snow,
With snowflakes falling gently down
To melt on us below.
But winter can take many forms,
Some raw and dank and grey,
With chills that penetrate our bones
And fog that lasts all day.
Some winter days are sharp and clear
And ears can feel its bite!
The rooftops dangle icicles
That sparkle in the light.
Air feels so cold it hurts our lungs
And brings tears to our eyes,
But nights bring frosty magic, with
Some dazzling starlit skies.
And if we have a snowy spell
With low bright winter sun,
Excited children, woolly warm,
Have lots of sledging fun!
Whatever form our winter takes
We know that we must share it;
And all that you and I can do
Is simply grin and bear it!
