Footsteps In Ashbridge Episode 02

Duncan, the head librarian, hailed Lou as Harry wandered in.
“Lou! All set for the wedding?” Duncan asked. “Neil looks like a dog with two tails.”
“That exactly describes my big brother since he met Tina!” Lou smiled. “Yes, it should be a lovely day.
“Quick word, Duncan. I’ve met the new year four teacher. Her name’s Sarah Dixon.”
Duncan’s family had lived next door to Lou’s after they’d moved down from Edinburgh when he was a child.
Now she was kept up to date with his life through his daughter Imogen, best friend of her niece Chloe.
So she was aware that he struggled, as any single parent would, with a full-time job and bringing up two children.
Duncan’s son, Jamie, was quiet and small for his age.
When Lou took her turn on playground duty as a classroom assistant, she kept a look out for him.
For the first time he’d be in her class during the next school year.
“She’s in her thirties and she seemed lovely – very warm and friendly,” she assured Duncan. “I’m sure Jamie will like her.”
She looked for Harry and saw him talking animatedly to a young woman wearing pink leggings.
It was as if a flamingo had alighted between the shelves.
When she looked back at Duncan she could see he’d followed her gaze and a smile flitted briefly across his face.
She went to ask if he knew who the woman was but Duncan got in first.
“I worry that Jamie’s in a little world of his own most of the time,” he said. “It’s good to know you keep an eye on him, Lou.”
