Fiction Sneak Peek: August 19, 2017 issue
This is the illustration for Eirin Thompson’s story “That Fairground Attraction”, and shows Rosie and Jake falling in love on the dodgems. Trouble is, he’ll be moving on when the fair does…
“The Last Day” by Wendy Clarke is about a colliery closing, something that has affected thousands of families over the last few decades. Dan thinks about his future, and sees nothing in it… Illustration by Sailesh Thakrar.
Another Ms Clarke, this time Karen, writes “Out And About”. It’s about Monica, lying on the grass, enjoying the sun on her face…until a little boy stands over her and asks, “Is she dead?” Illustration by Jim Dewar.
The next story made us laugh. It’s “Life’s Lottery” by Mel Barnes, about Neil finding a lottery ticket in a used carrier bag – a ticket that turns out to be a winner. What now? Does he keep the cash, or try to track down the rightful winner? Sarah Holliday illustrated this one for us.
Val Bonsall’s Victorian Detectives are back with “The Body In The Garden”. That says it all really. Illustration: Ruth Blair.
We all hate to lose a special piece of jewellery. It’s happened to Lara in “Hidden Treasure”, but as the write-up says, it’s funny the things you find when you’re least expecting to. Written by Deborah Tomlin and illustrated by Sarah Holliday.
In “Outside The Box” by Em Barnard, Noah’s had a great idea for his family history project. Of course Mum and Gran get involved, but things don’t exactly go to plan. Illustrated by Gerard Fay.
Serials
We’ve another new serial starting this week. “Sanctuary Island” by Lydia Jones has a sumptuous Aegean setting, where Sophie has gone to write Hollywood actress Helena’s life story. It’s hard to believe this is Lydia’s first serial for us when she’s been writing wonderful short stories for years. Remember our serial competition? This was her entry.
And it’s still only part 2 of Heather Pardoe’s period story “Together We Stand”. This week, they have to deal with an intruder at the house, and a veto on Tanni’s photography studio….
Series
In “On Wings Of Song” by Joyce Begg, Lizzie’s on a day out and marvels at the grandeur of Scotland’s scenery. We couldn’t agree more.
And you can’t miss the latest in “Riverside”, our weekly soap by Glenda Young. The birdwatchers have hit the headlines, but the vicar has a plan to rattle their cage.
