Writing Limericks For National Limerick Day

Woman's hand writing in blank notebook with a coffee

Today (12th) is National Limerick Day! So, the team thought it’d be fun to try our hand at writing our own limericks. Join our writing limericks challenge and share your creations!

National Limerick Day is in celebration of Edward Lear, known for his nonsense poetry and limericks. The definition of a limerick is a funny five-lined poem following a rhyme scheme of AABBA. Lear’s limericks were characterised by types of people, like the ‘Old Man’, ‘Young Lady’.

There was an Old Man with a beard,

Who said, “It is just as I feared!

Two Owls and a Hen,

Four Lacks and a Wren,

Have all built their nests in my beard!”

Here are some of our attempts. Which do you think is best?

Judey, Production Editor

Our world is defying description:

Mad politics, wars and affliction.

So escape with a smile

To the “Friend” for a while

And take out a yearly subscription!

Marion, Features team

There’s a magazine we’d recommend

Out Wednesdays; it’s “The People’s Friend”

There are stories galore

And features, what’s more,

So much reading, beginning to end!

Alex, Features Editor

This is one for our friend Willie Shand

Who writes tales of our lovely homeland

On his trips to explore

He gets up around 4

To be out in the hills and get tanned.

Yvonne, Features team

Two long years we’ve been working from home

Virtual meetings on Teams, no offices to roam

Now we’re back with a bang,

the ‘Friend’ cheery gang

With the buzzing of chatter and phones

Jacki, Sub Editor

Pet cats

I have a pet cat, who’s called Milo,

And, unlike other cats, he’s not shy, so

He won’t leave you alone

And sometimes is prone

To stealing your coffee. But why, though?

Dusty is grey, silver and white

And sometimes, during the night,

She’ll jump up on my bed

Screaming to be fed.

“Mum!” she cries. “Time to get up, right?”

Liz, Knitting Editor

The cat, the dog, even the budgie,

They really get me in a tizzy,

Their toys they eschew

Create a to-do

Shredding owners’ patterns aplenty!

Jacky, Digital Content Editor

Everyone wished Jacky “good luck”,

A new job! She hoped she didn’t suck.

She was nervous to join the team,

but they were all a total dream,

especially because they all love a good book!
