How to Hygge in Summer

summer hygge

The Swedish way of life, Hygge, is not exclusive to winter

It may surprise some of you to learn that the relaxed, laid-back slow living way of life, hygge, is not just a winter past time. With a little thought and attention to the right things, you can create a great summer hygge space in your home.

Making use of colour, your outdoor space, planning gatherings with friends and family, and, of course, lights, you will be on the right track.

Cool colours around the home

Adding a few light coloured pastels or muted tones around the home are good components of summer hygge. Scatter cushions, or add prints to your walls. Flowers are a great way to add a splash of colour, choose from sunflowers or tulips for that Scandi appeal. A scatter throw is ideal, as nothing says summer cosy than a blanket to curl up in when the heat has disappeared from the day.

Outdoor space

Create an outdoor space you want to relax in, a space that you enjoy lounging in. Invest in good garden furniture, and scatter throws and cushions for a splash of colour. Add picnic rugs and beanbags to grass areas, hang dream catchers from branches, and plant flowers in time to flower in summer. You could even pack up the car and head to the beach, feel the sand between your toes and paddle in the sea.

Lights

Hygge wouldn’t be hygge without fairy lights appearing somewhere! Take advantage of the summer sun and use solar-powered lights in your garden, Hang from trees, bushes, and fences for a magical feel when the sun goes down. Enjoy the glow as the sun sets and the twinkle lights come to life.

Nice food and friends

There’s no better time to invite your friends and family over and eat good food, play happy music, and sip drinks until the sun goes down. Long lazy days spent with friends and family, eating, chatting and laughing are what makes memories. Take plenty of photos so you can remember come winter time. As the sun sets, start up the firepit and make s’mores. We adore these marshmallows.

A quiet space

After all that sunshine and entertaining a special quiet place in your house that is just for you is the perfect summer hygge space. A chair by the fireside, or in the sunlight, is ideal. With a good book and a drink of choice, you’ll be feeling cosy and relaxed before you know it.
