Willie Shand travels over the sea to the Isle of Skye, in the September 3, 2022 issue of “The People’s Friend”.

Join Willie as he charts Dr Samuel Johnson and James Boswell’s remarkable journey to the Hebrides in 1733. In August that year, the two distinguished gents set out into a land few of their standing had ventured to visit before.

We’ll follow in their footsteps, visiting Slains Castle, the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” and the ruins of Elgin’s cathedral.  Later, as we easily climb the steep and twisting Mam Ratagan road by car, spare a thought for James and Samuel, who had to make the journey on horseback . . .

On Skye, the pair explored the island on a hike and thought Dunvegan Castle looked “as if let down from heaven by the four corners to be the residence of a chief”.

Willie reveals more about the locations on their itinerary in the magazine.

Literary Treasure Trail

As a child, books weren’t a big part of life for Ashlee Colvin. It was only later that she discovered dyslexia was key to why she had never enjoyed teaching. As a teacher, Ashlee now has a burning passion to make sure children don’t miss out on the joys of getting lost in a story.

She has gone about it in a fittingly novel fashion, by getting youngsters to follow a literary treasure trail to track down books she hid in her home town of Great Harwood, Lancashire.

Bill Gibb finds out more in the magazine.

Air Ambulance Charity

Lucy Air Ambulance for Children (Lucy AAC) is the only charity in the UK that flies children to hospital by aeroplane.

CEO Charlotte Young explains that Lucy AAC provides vital flights to seriously ill children. They perhaps need to go to hospital for specialist tests, treatment or surgery and are unsuitable for transfer by ambulance or helicopter.

As Charlotte explains, for babies and children, a flight in a specially adapted plane is smoother, safer and much less traumatic than travelling in a road ambulance or an air ambulance helicopter.

Janey Swanson chats to Charlotte to find out more about Lucy AAC.

Few of us consider the simple act of choosing what to wear a privilege. It was this realisation that drove Sol Escobar to set up non-profit organisation Give Your Best, which enables those in need to select their own clothes for free from an online catalogue of donated items.

Gillian Harvey had a chat to Sol to find out more. Read all about Give Your Best in the magazine.

Elsewhere in the September 3, 2022 issue, we have a collection of delicious lamb recipes. Plus we offer a touch of luxury with our knitting pattern this week – a cashmere ribbed cardigan.
