For this week’s Story Starter, I’ve looked to the heavens.
For over 150 years, “The People’s Friend” has been based here in Dundee, in the north-east of Scotland.
Weather-wise, one of the best things about living here is that although it can be cold, it’s typically bright and dry. Did you know Dundee is the sunniest city in Scotland?
In contrast, rain has been in the news a lot recently. According to the Met Office, we’ve just had the wettest February in the UK since 1862.
Not enough, or just too much
In Australia, much-needed rain finally fell after the hot, dry spell which led to widespread bushfires. And here in the UK, we’ve seen yet more severe flooding, causing headaches, and heartaches.
So this week’s story starter is all about rain. Some welcome, some definitely not. When there’s not enough, or just too much. “Water, water everywhere, nor any drop to drink”.
Floods. Being at the mercy of the weather, even in the 21st century. Sandbags. Battening down the hatches.
Flood barriers. Defences. Facing adversity, perhaps not for the first time. Plans changed overnight.
The weather forecast. Waiting, to see how things are going to develop.
Swollen rivers. Houses and communities marooned. Properties flooded or at risk.
The bravery of the emergency services. Community spirit. Everyone pulling together.
How nature adapts (this week, I saw an image on the online news of swans, swimming up the high street).
Cleaning up, getting back to normal. Rainbows. Sunshine after the rain.
April showers. St Swithin’s Day.
Umbrellas. “Rain Mates”. Remember them?
In our thoughts
Severe weather events of the past, as well as those in living memory. The Great Snow of 1947. The Great Storm of 1987. 2018’s “Beast From The East”.
And what about the opposite — when there’s not enough water? Droughts, like the one here in the UK in 1976. Arid places. Feeling the heat.
So, it’s over to you.
Meanwhile, “Friends” around the world, who’ve been affected by too much, or not enough, rain, are in our thoughts.
