Pat Coulter enjoys a visit to beautiful Beaulieu in the heart of the New Forest, in the August 27, 2022 issue of “The People’s Friend”.

Join Pat and dog Poppy as they return to the home of the stately Palace House, the seat of the Montagu family, and the family attraction that encompasses the National Motor Museum. It’s a Platinum anniversary for Palace House, too, which first opened its doors to the public in 1952.

Seventy years ago, Edward, Lord Montagu, decided to open Palace House with an extra surprise of some mechanical horsepower.

The National Motor Museum is still a great day out for the whole family, as we’ll discover on our visit with Pat. Find out more in the magazine.

Wild swimming may be currently en vogue, but the concept of wading through Britain’s chilly waters is definitely not new.

We can enjoy this exhilarating activity in a safe way by practising our lengths in one of the UK’s tidal pools. Tidal pools protect swimmers from being swept away by strong currents.

One of these stunning coastline structures is Pittenweem Tidal Pool, which fell into disrepair in the 1980s.

But now, thanks to a huge community effort, the Scottish sea pool has been rejuvenated and is once again fit for purpose.

David Thomson and the West Braes Project made a splash by restoring Pittenweem Tidal Pool. Dawn Geddes finds out more.

Neighbours

Some programmes become part of your life. Back when Douglas McPherson was still living at home, every teatime was accompanied by the refrain: “Neighbours, everybody needs good neighbours…”

At which point they’d sit down as a family to eat while they watched the daily adventures of Harold Bishop, Lou Carpenter, Dr Karl and the rest of Ramsay Street’s residents.

Neighbours began broadcasting on BBC1 in the UK on October 27, 1986, and was soon pulling in 16 million viewers, which was roughly the entire population of Australia at the time!

The wedding of Scott and Charlene was the most successful episode ever, and the third most-watched UK programme that year, seen by 19.6 million British fans.

However, when Channel 5 announced earlier this year that they were dropping the soap, the fate of Ramsay Street was sealed. The final episode was aired on Friday, July 29.

In the magazine, Douglas bids a fond farewell to the long-running Australian soap.
